Purpose and Importance of ABRID

“Public protection through examination and Certification”

Certification by ABRID is the highest standard of professionalism for interior designers in the State of Alabama.

The Alabama Board for Registered Interior Designers (ABRID) administers the Alabama Interior Design Registration Act of 2010 under Title 34, Section 15C of the Code of Alabama 1975, which establishes a registration process for those interior designers who choose to obtain the credential as a Registered Interior Designer (RID) in the state of Alabama. The Board meets regularly to consider applications for registration, to review disciplinary cases, engage in rulemaking to implement the provisions set forth in its statues and state laws, develop educational events for students, young professionals, registered interior designers and the public, and conduct other general business as necessary.

Registration establishes minimum competency of interior designers to promote and protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public. To be granted registration, an interior designer must meet the standards of education and professional experience as defined in The Code of Alabama 1975, Title 34 Section 15C, as well as successfully completing the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination; an extensive 3-part test of knowledge, training, and skills. Annual continuing education requirements are dictated to ensure Registered Interior Designers maintain the skills and knowledge necessary to competently practice interior design that promotes and protects the health, safety, and welfare of the public.

Registered Interior Designer” is the only legally recognized title for interior designers in the state of Alabama. It is not a designation from a professional organization.
